Abstract
Jhesica Patalo. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Pangala’, Toraja Utara, dengan tujuan mengkaji aspek musikal tradisi vokal sakral Ma’dandan dalam upacara Ma’Bua’. Ma’dandan merupakan bentuk pujian dan ungkapan syukur kepada Puang Matua, yang dinyanyikan secara berbalas oleh kelompok perempuan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode etnomusikologi sebagai grand teori, berdasarkan pemikiran Alan Merriam, Bruno Nettl, dan Jeff Todd Titon yang menekankan pentingnya memahami musik dalam konteks budaya. Teknik pengumpulan data meliputi observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa Ma’dandan memiliki struktur musikal khas, termasuk unsur melodi, ritme, tempo, dinamika, harmoni, dan tangga nada pentatonik. Nyanyian ini juga menampilkan bentuk performatif berupa gerakan tongkat dan suke yang memperkuat ekspresi musikal. Kata Kunci: Ma’dandan, Ma’Bua’, etnomusikologi, Toraja, musik vokal sakral. ABSTRACT Jhesica Patalo. This research was conducted in Pangala’, North Toraja, with the aim of examining the musical aspects of the sacred vocal tradition Ma’dandan in the Ma’Bua’ ceremony. Ma’dandan is a form of praise and expression of gratitude to Puang Matua, sung in a call-and-response style by a group of women. This study employs a qualitative approach using the ethnomusicological method as the grand theory, based on the perspectives of Alan Merriam, Bruno Nettl, and Jeff Todd Titon, who emphasize the importance of understanding music within its cultural context. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. The analysis reveals that Ma’dandan has a distinctive musical structure, including elements such as melody, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, harmony, and the pentatonic scale. The singing is also accompanied by performative elements involving the movement of sticks (tekken) and suke, which enhance its musical expression.
