Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was motivated by the widespread occurrence of truant behavior among grade VIII.11 students at SMP Negeri 2 Rantepao. The purpose of this study was to address and reduce students' truant behavior through the implementation of group counseling services utilizing self-control techniques. The methodology employed was Guidance and Counseling Action Research (GCAR), adapting Kurt Lewin's cyclic model, which encompasses planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. The subjects consisted of 5 students exhibiting high levels of truant behavior. The self-control technique was applied through three main steps: self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and self-reinforcement. The results demonstrated a significant decrease in truant behavior. In the pre-cycle condition, the average percentage of student truancy reached 74.16% (very high category). Following the interventions, the truancy rate was successfully reduced to 67.50% in Cycle I, and dropped drastically to a range of 25% – 29.17% with an average of 27.50% in Cycle II. In conclusion, the implementation of group counseling services using self-control techniques is effective in reducing student truant behavior, as evidenced by the achievement indicator falling below the 31% threshold (non-truant category). Keywords: Truant Behavior, Self-Control Technique, Group Counseling, Guidance and Counseling Action Research.
