Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyse nature conservation from the perspective of Leonardo Boff’s ecotheology within the Iwaro tribe community in South Sorong, Southwest Papua. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilising data collection techniques such as observation, interviews, documentation, and literature review. Research informants included the tribal chief, pastors, and members of the Iwaro indigenous community. The findings indicate that forests, rivers, and customary lands serve as sources of livelihood, cultural identity, and ancestral heritage for the community. The expansion of oil palm plantations has resulted in environmental degradation, the loss of food sources, and socio-economic changes within the community. Viewed through the lens of Leonardo Boff’s ecotheology, Genesis 1:28 is understood as a mandate for stewardship rather than a justification for the political exploitation of nature. Consequently, the church is called to fulfil an ecological mission by engaging in environmental conservation, advocating for the rights of indigenous peoples, and fostering harmonious relationships among humanity, God, and all of creation to ensure the sustainability of life. Keywords: Church Mission, Leonardo Boff’s Ecotheology, Genesis 1:28, Nature Conservation, Iwaro Tribe.
