Abstract
Kata Kunci: kerbau, Rambu Solo', tedong silaga, sosio-teologis, teologi kontekstual, masyarakat Toraja, simbol, pergeseran makna ABSTRACT This study examines the meaning of buffaloes in the life of the Toraja community, revealing a duality of interpretation: on the one hand, buffaloes serve as symbols of honor within the context of cosmology and traditional rituals; on the other hand, they function as fighting animals in the tedong silaga phenomenon, which has undergone a shift in meaning in the contemporary era. The background of this study stems from the changing value orientation of tedong silaga, from its originally sacred character to a profane one, namely from a ritual of honor within the Rambu Solo' ceremony to a form of commercial entertainment and gambling that has diminished its theological dimension. This research employs a qualitative approach using a socio-theological method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies conducted in Lembang Sa'dan Ballopasange', Sa'dan District, North Toraja Regency. The informants consisted of traditional leaders, pastors, and Torajan youth. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The theoretical framework applied in this study includes F.W. Dillistone's theory of symbols, Victor Turner's theory of ritual, and Stephen B. Bevans' contextual theology, particularly the countercultural model and the praxis model. Keywords: buffalo, Rambu Solo', tedong silaga, socio-theological approach, contextual theology, Toraja community, symbol, shift of meaning.
