Abstract
ABSTRACT The Mangngaro tradition is one of the death rituals practiced by the people of Nosu, Mamasa Regency, West Sulawesi Province, and is held annually. In recent years, younger generations have experienced a shift in their understanding of the spiritual meaning of the Mangngaro tradition, tending to view it merely as a cultural symbol or customary procedure without fully appreciating the values of respect embedded within it. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze the values of respect contained in the Mangngaro tradition and examine how these values can be integrated into Christian Education in Nosu District. This study employed a qualitative ethnographic approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving traditional leaders, local community members, Christian Religious Education teachers, and youth as the primary informants. The findings reveal that the Mangngaro tradition embodies interconnected values of respect, including respect for ancestors, kasiuluran (kinship), sikamasean (love and compassion), and responsibility, all of which are expressed collectively throughout every stage of the ritual. These values are consistent with the principles of Christian Education, indicating that the Mangngaro tradition has the potential to serve as a medium for character education and as a contextual partner in Christian Education by fostering love, responsibility, and solidarity among the younger generation, provided that respect for ancestors is understood as remembrance and faithfulness rather than worship. This study recommends integrating these values of respect into Christian Education, encouraging the active involvement of young people in preserving the tradition, and strengthening collaboration among families, churches, and schools to document and transmit the cultural significance of the Mangngaro tradition to future generations. Keywords: Mangngaro, Values of Respect, Christian Education.
