Abstract
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami motivasi pelayanan majelis Gereja Toraja di Jemaat Buntu Sopai dengan menggunakan perspektif teori pilihan rasional. Dalam konteks kehidupan bergereja, kehadiran majelis sebagai pelayan umat sangat penting dalam menjaga stabilitas dan keberlangsungan pelayanan rohani maupun sosial. Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif. Adapun teknik-teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan yaitu studi pustaka, wawancara dan observasi, dan menganalisis penulis mereduksi dan menginterpretasi data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa motivasi utama pelayanan majelis bukan semata-mata bersifat spiritual, tetapi juga dipengaruhi oleh pertimbangan logis seperti kesadaran pribadi, panggilan iman, penghargaan sosial, dan dukungan komunitas dalam proses pengambilan keputusan. Dengan demikian, pelayanan majelis dapat dipahami sebagai hasil dari kalkulasi untung-rugi yang sesuai dengan prinsip teori pilihan rasional, majelis bertindak sebagai aktor yang memanfaatkan sumber daya non-material. Temuan ini memperkaya pemahaman tentang dinamika pelayanan dalam Gereja Toraja dan membuka ruang diskusi tentang perlunya pembinaan motivasi yang berlandaskan spiritualitas yang murni. Kata Kunci: Gereja Toraja, Majelis Gereja, Motivasi, Pelayanan ABSTRACT This study aims to understand the motivation behind the service of church elders in the Toraja Church at Buntu Sopai Congregation through the perspective of rational choice theory. In the context of church life, the presence of elders as spiritual servants plays a crucial role in maintaining the stability and continuity of both spiritual and social ministries. This research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data collection techniques include literature review, interviews, and observation. The data were then reduced and interpreted by the researcher for analysis. The findings reveal that the elders’ motivation for service is not purely spiritual, but also influenced by rational considerations such as personal awareness, a sense of divine calling, social recognition, and community support in the decision-making process. Thus, their ministry can be understood as a result of cost-benefit calculations aligned with the principles of rational choice theory, where elders act as actors utilizing non-material resources. These findings enrich the understanding of ministry dynamics within the Toraja Church and open up discussions on the need to nurture motivations grounded in sincere spirituality.
