Abstract

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to analyze the meaning of purification in the ma'tallu rara ritual in Balla village using Stephen B. Bevans' anthropological model. The problem of this research is how the concept of purification carried out in ma'tallu rara relates to the concept of purification in Christianity, which is believed to have been accomplished through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. The research method used is qualitative research with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, and literature studies. The basic theory used is Stephen B. Bevans' anthropological theory. The findings of this research are that the meaning of ma'tallu rara is the concept of purifying a place by sacrificing three animals, namely chickens, dogs, and pigs, as offerings to God so that the place considered dirty or mystical can be purified. However, as believers, purification is not only focused on place but also on all aspects of human life, which must be holy, both through words, behavior, thought patterns, and faith.
