Abstract

Toraja, a region in South Sulawesi, has a rich culture and tradition, including in the aspects of leadership and spirituality. Leadership in Toraja society is perceived not merely as a political authority but also embodies a profound spiritual dimension, deeply rooted in the beliefs of Aluk To Dolo. In a biblical perspective, ideal leadership is based on integrity and responsibility, as written in Proverbs 10:9 and Proverbs 11:14, which emphasize that a leader must be honest, have wisdom, and be supported by many advisors. One of the main challenges in leadership is to build integrity and apply servant leadership principles. A true leader is not a boss who only gives orders, but someone who serves and brings positive impact to his/her community. In Toraja culture, traditional leaders in the To Parenge' system are expected to have courage (barani), wisdom (kinaa/manarang), and prosperity (sugi'), and to be able to serve as role models for their communities. However, in the modern context, there has been a shift in leadership values, where some leaders tend to emphasize power over service. This research aims to examine the dynamics of traditional and modern leadership in Toraja by conducting case studies on ten Lembangs spread across Tana Toraja and North Toraja districts. This research will examine the variables of spiritual leadership, culture, and the concept of servant leadership. The results of this study are expected to provide insight into the continuity and transformation of leadership culture in Toraja, as well as how the principles of servant leadership can be applied in the social life of today's society. ABSTRAK Toraja, sebuah daerah di Sulawesi Selatan, memiliki budaya dan tradisi yang kaya, termasuk dalam aspek kepemimpinan dan spiritualitas. Kepemimpinan dalam masyarakat Toraja tidak hanya dipandang sebagai otoritas politik, tetapi juga memiliki dimensi spiritual yang kuat, berakar pada kepercayaan Aluk To Dolo. Dalam perspektif Alkitab, kepemimpinan yang ideal didasarkan pada integritas dan tanggung jawab, sebagaimana tertulis dalam Amsal 10:9 dan Amsal 11:14, yang menekankan bahwa seorang pemimpin harus jujur, memiliki kebijaksanaan, serta didukung oleh banyak penasihat. Salah satu tantangan utama dalam kepemimpinan adalah membangun integritas dan menerapkan prinsip kepemimpinan yang melayani. Seorang pemimpin sejati bukanlah seorang bos yang hanya memberi perintah, melainkan seseorang yang melayani dan membawa dampak positif bagi komunitasnya. Dalam budaya Toraja, pemimpin tradisional dalam sistem To Parenge’ diharapkan memiliki keberanian (barani), kebijaksanaan (kinaa/manarang), dan kesejahteraan (sugi’), serta mampu menjadi teladan bagi masyarakatnya. Namun, dalam konteks modern, terjadi pergeseran nilai kepemimpinan, di mana beberapa pemimpin cenderung lebih menekankan kekuasaan dibandingkan pelayanan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji dinamika kepemimpinan tradisional dan modern di Toraja dengan melakukan studi kasus pada sepuluh Lembang yang tersebar di Kabupaten Tana Toraja dan Toraja Utara. Penelitian ini akan menguji variabel-variabel kepemimpinan spiritual, budaya, serta konsep kepemimpinan yang melayani. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan wawasan mengenai kesinambungan dan transformasi budaya kepemimpinan di Toraja, serta bagaimana prinsip kepemimpinan yang melayani dapat diterapkan dalam kehidupan sosial masyarakat saat ini.
