Abstract

Kata Kunci: Teologi feminis, kekerasan berbasis gender, patriarki, film Women from Rote Island. ABSTRACT This study explores the representation of gender-based violence in the film Women from Rote Island using a feminist theological approach. The research is grounded in the reality that women continue to experience violence in various regions, especially within strongly patriarchal cultural contexts. The film portrays the true stories of women from Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara, who face structural oppression and sexual violence legitimized by traditional and religious values. The primary focus of this research is to analyze how violence against women is depicted in the film and how feminist theology offers a critical and liberative interpretation of this reality. This study employs a qualitative method through a library research approach and content analysis techniques of the film’s narrative, symbols, and scenes. The primary data source is the film Women from Rote Island, while secondary data is obtained from books, journals, and literature related to feminist theology, gender, and violence against women. The findings reveal that acts of violence against female characters in the film such as physical restraint, rape, marginalization, and negative labeling are reflections of deeply rooted patriarchal structures in society and religion. Feminist theology views women's experiences as legitimate theological sources and calls for a reinterpretation of religious teachings to advocate for justice and liberation. Characters such as Martha and Orpa exemplify the struggle of women against injustice while opening up space for a more humane and equitable understanding of faith. This study contributes to the development of an inclusive contextual theology and promotes social change through a gender-just approach that prioritizes the voices and experiences of survivors of violence. Keywords: Feminist theology, gender-based violence, patriarchy, Women from Rote Island film.
