Abstract

ABSTRACT The Mero’ tradition in Lembang Butang is a mourning family tradition characterized by rice taboo and the consumption of ko’dong as a symbol of ancestral respect. This tradition embodies the values of simplicity and togetherness. However, it is threatened by modernization as rice has become a staple food, alongside the rise of consumerism and individualism. The implementation of Mero’ also differs between Aluk Todolo followers, for whom it is obligatory, and Christians, for whom it is optional. Traditional leaders, or pemangku adat, play a key role as ritual leaders, educators of philosophical values, mediators of religious differences, and agents of rule adaptation to keep Mero’ relevant. This study analyzes the leadership style of pemangku adat in preserving the Mero’ tradition in Lembang Butang. The research uses a descriptive qualitative case study method with observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation techniques. The findings are expected to reveal the leadership style and strategies employed by pemangku adat in addressing the challenges of the rice taboo, so that the Mero’ tradition can remain sustainable as a cultural identity in the modern era. Keywords: leadership style, pemangku adat, Mero’ tradition, Lembang Butang.
