Abstract

ABSTRACT This study examines the Ma’palin ritual as a Torajan customary tradition and its relevance to the strengthening of congregational spirituality in the Toraja Church, Mongsia Congregation, Rantebua Classis, from the perspective of Christian theology. The Ma’palin ritual is a practice of relocating the remains of the deceased, which continues to be preserved and has undergone a transformation of meaning following the introduction of Christian teachings. This study aims to explore how the congregation understands the Ma’palin ritual in the light of Christian faith and its contribution to the spiritual growth of the congregation. The research employs an interpretative method with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through literature review, observation, and interviews with pastors, church elders, traditional leaders, and members of the congregation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the Ma’palin ritual is understood as an expression of love and respect for deceased family members rather than as ancestor worship. The ritual serves as a medium for faith reflection, fostering attitudes of gratitude, humility, and hope in eternal life. With proper interpretation, the Ma’palin ritual remains relevant in strengthening congregational spirituality without contradicting Christian faith. Keywords: Ma’palin Ritual, Christian Spirituality, Contextual Theology, Torajan Culture.
