Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji relevansi etika Protestan Weberian dalam kehidupan umat Gereja Toraja Jemaat Lengkong sebagai upaya memahami implementasi teori klasik Max Weber dalam konteks non-Barat. Menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif, penelitian dilakukan di Gereja Toraja Jemaat Lengkong, Kabupaten Toraja Utara dari November 2024 hingga Juni 2025. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara mendalam dengan pendeta, majelis, dan jemaat, observasi langsung, serta analisis dokumen. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa etika Protestan Weber memiliki relevansi selektif dalam kehidupan umat. Relevansi tertinggi terletak pada dimensi spiritual-motivational, dimana konsep panggilan kerja dan integrasi iman-pekerjaan terinternalisasi dengan baik. Relevansi sedang pada aspek praktis-ekonomi dengan penerapan etos kerja keras dan disiplin, meskipun hasil ekonomi tidak sesuai ekspektasi teori Weber. Relevansi rendah pada aspek kapitalistik karena tidak ada orientasi akumulasi modal yang kuat. Penelitian ini berkontribusi pada pengembangan teori sosiologi agama dengan menunjukkan bahwa implementasi etika religius bersifat kontekstual dan adaptif, serta memperkaya diskusi hubungan agama-ekonomi dengan model alternatif yang berorientasi pada keberlanjutan komunitas daripada akumulasi modal. ABSTRACT This research examines the relevance of Weberian Protestant ethics in the life of the Lengkong Toraja Church congregation as an effort to understand the implementation of Max Weber's classical theory in a non-Western context. Using descriptive qualitative methods, the research was conducted at Lengkong Toraja Church, North Toraja Regency from November 2024 to June 2025. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with pastors, church boards, and congregation members, direct observation, and document analysis. Findings show that Weber's Protestant ethics has selective relevance in congregational life. The highest relevance lies in the spiritual-motivational dimension, where the concept of work calling and faith-work integration are well internalized. Moderate relevance appears in practical-economic aspects with the application of hard work ethic and discipline, although economic results do not match Weber's theoretical expectations. Low relevance is seen in capitalistic aspects due to the absence of strong capital accumulation orientation. This research contributes to the development of sociology of religion theory by showing that the implementation of religious ethics is contextual and adaptive, and enriches the discussion of religion-economy relations with alternative models oriented toward community sustainability rather than capital accumulation.
