Abstract
Kata Kunci: Solidaritas Sosial, Tradisi Tongkon, Emile Durkheim, Solidaritas Mekanis, Rambu Solo’, Gotong Royong ABSTRACT This study explores the Tongkon tradition in Lembang Kadundung, Masanda Subdistrict, as a form of social solidarity within the Toraja community, analyzed through the lens of Emile Durkheim’s theory of social solidarity. The research is motivated by the shifting values in the practice of Tongkon, which originally emphasized mutual cooperation and empathy, but is now increasingly influenced by transactional dynamics due to modernization and economic pressures. The purpose of this study is to understand how the values of mechanical solidarity are reflected in the Tongkon tradition and how they contribute to maintaining social harmony. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that Tongkon strengthens social bonds through communal presence, moral support, and cooperation among residents, particularly during mourning rituals such as Rambu Solo’. This tradition represents a concrete manifestation of Durkheim’s concept of mechanical solidarity. However, challenges arise as some community members begin to view participation in Tongkon as a social debt that must be reciprocated. This research is expected to contribute to the study of cultural sociology and promote the preservation of solidarity values within the Toraja society.
