Abstract

Era Veny (23010012) tahun 2025 menyusun tesis berjudul Memaknai Tradisi Ma’patoei Ulang dari Perspektif Calvin tentang Providensia Dei di Gereja Toraja Jemaat Lempo Berurung. Dibimbing oleh Dr. Frans Paillin Rumbi, M.Th. selaku pembimbing I dan Dr. Petrus Tiranda, M.Th. selaku pembimbing II. Judul tersebut dilatarbelakangi oleh fenomena yang dialami penulis ditengah-tengah masyarakat Toraja secara khusus di Lempo Berurung yang masih melaksanakan tradisi ma’patoei ulang. Penulis berupaya untuk memaknai tradisi ma’patoei ulang yang merupakan warisan leluhur (agama suku Toraja) untuk dimaknai dalam kekristenan. Sehingga, melalui pendekatan fenomenologi, tulisan ini berupaya memaknai pemeliharaan bagi hewan kurban hanya berasal dari Allah sebagaimana yang dipahami oleh Calvin dengan istilah providensia Dei. Bagi Calvin, hanya tangan Allah yang selalu aktif itulah yang sanggup memelihara tatanan yang indah namun rapuh yang tampak di dalam ciptaan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu kualitatif dengan studi lapangan melalui wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Ma’patoei ulang dapat dilihat sebagai salah satu kearifan lokal yang berbasis keugaharian yakni adanya kesadaran akan kerapuhan ciptaan yang baik seperti kerbau, sehingga masyarakat setempat melaksanakan tradisi ini untuk mengantisipasi agar kerbau tersebut tidak mati sia-sia jika disembelih jauh sebelum ritual pemakaman. Keugaharian juga nampak dalam satu ekor kerbau (tandirapasan) yang dikhususkan harus disembelih dan untuk beberapa kerbau lainnya tidaklah menjadi keharusan. Kata kunci : Calvin, Ma’patoei Ulang, Providensia Dei, Toraja ABSTRACT Era Veny (23010012) in 2025 compiled a thesis entitled Interpreting the Ma'patoei Ulang Tradition from Calvin's Perspective on Providensia Dei in the Toraja Church of Lempo Berurung Congregation. Guided by Dr. Frans Paillin Rumbi, M.Th. as the first supervisor and Dr. Petrus Tiranda, M.Th. as the second supervisor. The title is motivated by the phenomenon experienced by the author in the midst of Toraja people, especially in Lempo Berurung, who still carry out the ma'patoei ulang tradition. The author seeks to interpret the ma'patoei ulang tradition which is an ancestral heritage (Toraja tribal religion) to be interpreted in Christianity. Thus, through a phenomenological approach, this paper seeks to interpret the care for sacrificial animals as coming only from God as understood by Calvin with the term providensia Dei. For Calvin, it is only the ever-active hand of God that is able to maintain the beautiful yet fragile order seen in creation. The research method used in this study is qualitative with field studies through interviews. The results show that Ma'patoei ulang can be seen as one of the local wisdoms based on keugaharian, namely the awareness of the fragility of good creation such as buffaloes, so that the local community carries out this tradition to anticipate that the buffalo does not die in vain if it is slaughtered long before the funeral ritual. Keugaharian is also evident in the fact that one buffalo (tandirapasan) in particular must be slaughtered and for some other buffaloes it is not a requirement.
