Abstract

Disabilitas adalah setiap orang yang memiliki keterbatasan fisik, intelektual, mental atau sensorik dalam jangka waktu yang cukup lama. Seringkali kehidupan kaum disabilitas, mendapatkan perlakukan yang tidak semestinya. Di Gereja Toraja Jemaat Buyuntana, kehadiran kaum disabilitas sampai hari ini masih sangat kurang diperhatikan, bahkan kerap mendapat tindakan diskriminasi. Creamer memiliki harapan bahwa penyandang disabilitas tidak lagi dilihat dari sudut pandang kekurangan, tapi sebagai pribadi yang mempunyai potensi dan peran dalam kehidupan bersesama. Penelitian kali ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode wawancara dan observasi untuk mengetahui sejauh mana pemahaman jemaat dan pelayan gereja terhadap eksistensi diri penyandang tuna rungu wicara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa masih terdapat tantangan dalam penerimaan serta keterlibatan penyandang disabilitas, baik secara spiritual maupun sosial, gereja menyadari penuh bahwa gereja masih sangat terbatas dalam menjangkau kaum disabilitas, bahkan gereja mengatakan bahwa hampir saja terlupakan. ABSTRACT Disability is anyone who has physical, intellectual, mental or sensory limitations for a long period of time. Often the lives of people with disabilities receive inappropriate treatment. In the Toraja Church, the Buyuntana Congregation, the occurrence of people with disabilities to this day is still very little attention, even often receiving discrimination. Creamer hopes that people with disabilities will no longer be seen from the perspective of shortcomings, but as individuals who have potential and roles in the lives of others. This study uses a qualitative approach with interview and observation methods to determine the extent of the understanding of the congregation and church servants regarding the existence of the deaf and mute. The results of the study show that there are challenges in accepting and involving people with disabilities, both spiritually and socially, the church is fully aware that the church is still very limited in reaching people with disabilities, even the church says that it is almost forgotten.
